“I’d always felt that dancing was my greatest form of expression,” says renowned dancer, choreographer, and now songstress, Vergi Rodriguez. “But now that I can invoke that same passion and emotion into my music, my hope is to make people want to dance with me.”

Though she lists among her influences legends like Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and the late, great Whitney Houston, one stands above all others: “Michael Jackson, of course. He remains the epitome of what it means to be a performer. So precise, so specific, and his love for music and dance always came across. I would have loved to have been able to work with him.”

Not that her list of collaborations goes unnoticed, having worked with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Jay-Z and Prince, amongst others. Beginning with her star turns as part of the Harlem Children’s Theater Company, where she sang, danced and acted in several off-Broadway musicals at the tender age of seven, Vergi’s work has since graced stages around the globe, as well as television shows like ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars,” MTV’s “Scratch and Burn,” and feature films like Universal Pictures’ Honey and Disney’s The Hot Chick.

Her first single, “Quieres de mi,” was written with young Latinas in mind, as a means of giving them the motivation and reassurance needed to walk proudly in pursuit of their dreams. And now with her aptly titled latest, “Come Dance With Me,” produced by German uber-producer Bounce Bro, she wants fans to not only do as the song says, but feel what’s in her heart. “It’s about making people dance, yes. But the lyrics and beat combine to capture and express how I feel about a certain someone, too.”

Released in early April on Mental Madness Records, “Come Dance With Me” features remixes by Europe’s DJ THT, J Web, Tom Pulse & Crystal Rock, as well as the US’s Lee Swagger.

Among her dream collaborations, she counts dance music luminaries like Robyn and Avicii, and believe it or not, jazz/funk veterans Jamiroquai. “Jay Kay’s music has always made me dance. I try to catch as many of the band’s shows as I can because they are STELLAR!” she gushes. And when she’s not collaborating, performing, dancing or catching Jamiroquai in action? The multi-talented Vergi spends her time writing music, crafting new material for her choreography and sharing her observations, thoughts and positive energy with the world via Twitter (@VergiLuv) and Tumblr blog, Taking Flight (vergiluv.tumblr.com).
